It's Time to Fix the Formula

The Montana School Funding Formula needs to change. Parents, community members, educators, and students know that the formula used to calculate state funding for our schools is both outdated and inadequate. But great news! We have a chance to advocate for change!

Every 10 years, Montana Law requires the legislature to take a meaningful look at the formula and how it is working for schools. This is called the "Decennial Study," and is conducted by a commission made up of legislators and other policymakers. This study begins summer of 2025.

Return here for myth-busting facts, advocacy opportunities, and ways to learn about our formula as it stands and why it is not working for Montana kids.

Why the Decennial Study Matters

Every ten years, Montana Law requires the legislature to "form the school funding interim commission...for the purpose of reassessing the state's school funding formula." This year, we have the chance to share real stories with this commission about how the funding formula is outdated, and is not working for our schools.

In the first meeting of the Commission on June 4th, legislative staff shared with the commission that we are spending LESS on schools in real dollars then we were 10 years ago. And the 2015 school funding commission found we were already underfunding our schools. Montana kids deserve better!
